Termite Management - FAQ
How do I know if I have a termite infestation?
Key Signs to Watch For:
- Mud tubes: These are mud tubes “highways” that are laid down by Termites to protect them from predators and allow then entry into your home unseen
Hollow‑sounding timbers: Most clients discover Termites inside of their homes accidentally when vacuuming, doing repairs or when doors become loose from their hinges. Many timbers have a “hollow” sound because Termites eat the internals of the timbers but leave the external undamaged to conceal their activity.
Discarded wings: Termite alate’s are the reproductive Termites, they shed or drop their wings when they start looking to build a new nest. You will see them in webbing mainly around light sources or piled on the ground. The alate’s 4 wings are equal in length, where as the flying ants have 2 long and 2 short wing lengths.
Evidence I may be at risk of a Termite attack.
- Flying Alate’s: These flying Termite’s can be seen in late afternoons and evenings inside or outside of your home. They are drawn to the lights especially around windows in spring/summer. The body of the Alate has no segregation unlike ants and their 4 wings are all the same length. Alates are generally found near or close to an existing Termite nest/colony so call us for a full Termite Inspection if you find them.
- Damaged Timbers around the property: If you find timbers around the home, like fencing, retaining walls, firewood, garden edging or weatherboards, there is a high likelihood you once had, or now have active Termites close to your home and may still be there. If your unsure if its Termites, just call us and we will take a look for you free of charge.
- Lapsed Termite inspection: If its been more than 12 months since your last inspection, you will have an increased risk of Termite attack. If you have installed a Termite management system like our Termite Full360 or BaitGuard, then the annual inspections will be protecting you.
How can I prevent termites from attacking my home?
- Build Types: Given the different designs or build types e.g. slab on ground V stumped homes, there are always areas that could and can allow concealed Termites to enter and attack your home. There is no 100% guarantee or system put in place that can fully protect your home although a system is better than no system at all.
- Do a walk around: By simply walking around your home on a regular basis and looking for signs of Termite activity can get ahead of an attack. Look for leaking taps, water pooling around your home, open ended downpipes that allow rainwater to site around the base or stumps of the home, piled timbers or firewood heaps within 50 meters, look for mud leads or damaged timbers. If you have a sub-floor, it must be checked for leaks regularly.
- Install a Termite system: Once a full Termite inspection has been completed, we will install our Termite Full360 or Termite BaitGuard system to manage and monitor around your homes 24/7. We will then maintain you Termite protection plan annually for the life of the system.
What's involved in a Termite Inspection?
A full inspection by a licensed Technician typically involves:
- External Inspection: An external inspection must be completed to the perimeter of your home out to your boundary fence-lines, or, up to a 50 meter radius around your home – whatever comes first. It includes all timbers in contact with soil, trees, landscaping, external surfaces of your home and sub-floor (if you have one).
- Internal Inspection: An internal inspection generally involves a visual inspection to all accessible areas inside of the property, this includes skirting boards, door frames, window sills and wet areas ( Bathrooms, kitchen , laundry etc) throughout the property. If accessible, we also inspect the roof voids but only if safe to do so.
- Detailed reporting: All inspections MUST be compliant with either the AS 3660 series or AS 4349 series report writing. They will include all areas as indicated above, but there are some variations around the type of inspection based on the standard being used. Some are just a Termite inspection only and some are Termites, and timber destroying pests like wood decay or Borers.
What Termite management system is best for my Home?
Treatment Options Include:
- Liquid Termiticides: A liquid Termiticide generally consists of a liquid like Bifenthrin (rapid termination on contact) or Fipronil (Termite transfer and colony nest elimination). These products are applied around the full perimeter of your home, depending on the home style. It’s applied into perimeter soiled areas , under pavers, under concrete or around your piers of the sub-floor. Some Termiticides last up to 10 years in soil but your Technician with advice on whats best for your situation.
- Baiting and Monitoring: A Baiting and Monitoring systems have come along way over the past 30 years, the new systems are designed stronger, last longer, easier to monitor and maintain, customizable and complimentary in cases where a full liquid system isn’t suitable. Our BaitGuard system is a proven Active Monitoring System allowing Termites to take the bait back to their nest for complete colony elimination removing the pressure from your home.
- Physical Systems: There are a number of physical systems available and are a good fit when the liquid or Baiting systems are not suitable. There are impregnated silicones, parging systems , mesh, steel, impregnated physical systems and reticulation systems.
Your Technician will be the best person to advise on the best Termite management system for you.
How much does a Termite Management System cost?
How we Calculate your Investment?
- Property Variables: Because every property and risk of Termites are different, we need to gather as much information from you and your home as we can. We do this by completing a full Termite inspection and report so we can identify the risks, any activity, whats already in place and how best to protect you into the future.
- Advice: Our goal, at all times, is to minimize and protect your property or business from increased risks of Termite attack. We balance your expectations and your budget with our strong recommendations around the best Termite management system for long term protection.
- Price variations: Because the way we apply a liquid Termiticide in accordance with the AS 3660 series, its impossible to offer a price online or over the phone, it must be an on site quote. The same goes for our full BaitGuard – Baiting and Monitoring systems, or “First line of Defence” system. We would need to make a site visit to ensure its a “Best Fit” system for you. There are options for partial monitoring of individual stations for high risk areas, although for full piece of mind, the BaitGuard upgrade starting from $1390 fully installed would be the best choice.
